So, trying to go to the nether brings me through to someone else's land claimed nether base, meaning I can't exit to the nether. I've contacted the user here on the forums (In april, on both accounts, no less), but they haven't been active since mid last-year, and this is starting to become a hassle. Is there any way to circumvent this issue other than getting permission from the player, as that doesn't seem likely. I have also tried creating nether portals on islands further away, but this gives the same result.

That can be fixed, either by you if you manage to get outside of the claim through another portal, or we can help you.
What needs to be done, is to build another portal on the nether side, that matches the coordinates of your nether portal in the overworld(you divide the coordinates by 8 to get the correct nether coordinates).
Ask any online staff member for help, and I'm sure someone can help you out.
